Group Scout Leader - Marcel Borg

"Being a member of the Scouts has made the man that I am now.  Through scouting, I have gained a myriad of skills and has exposed me to a thousand opportunities in my everyday life."

I joined Xgħajra Group as a Troop in 1996 at the age of 10.  Throughout the period in the Troop Section I was appointed as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and as a Senior Patrol Leader.

In December 2000 I was awarded the Royal Life Saving Society Medals and Crosses and served for a several time at St. John Ambulance Brigade and Rescue Unit.

In 2001 I was linked in the Venture Unit and served as a secretary, cashier and later was elected as a chairperson. During my period in the Venture Unit, I  achieved the Venture Award and in February 2006 was presented the Dolphin Award by the Chief Commissioner.  In July 2006 I was awarded the President Gold Award by the Honourable President Dr. E Fenech Adami himself.

I also travelled in the UK at Great Tower Campsite at the Lake District Windermere and together with other scouts, accomplished the Dolphin Award.  In April 2007, I attended the Queens Scout Parade & Service in Windsor Castle representing the Top Award Holders from Malta, were there I  had the opportunity to meet Her Majesty the Queen.

Act. Venture Scout Leader - Duncan Debattista

"In my younger days scouting has helped me to build my confidence and self-esteem, it taught me important life skills and leadership skills."

I joined the Xghajra Scout group in 2019 as a prospective Venture Scout Leader.  I was introduced to scouting way back in 1993 when I joined the Tarxien Scouts Group and formed part of the troop and subsequently the venture unit.  In 2017 I had the opportunity to meet with Marcel Borg, the Group Scout Leaderduring the Groupís summer camp.  Going back in time and sharing common experiences with Marcel during our short meeting instantly rekindled the passion I had for scouting.  In 2018 my son joined

the cubís section of the Xghajra Scouts Group and some months later I started to give a helping hand to the Group with some of their activities.  In my younger days scouting has helped me to build my confidence and self-esteem, it taught me important life skills and leadership skills.  It made me appreciate our environment and boosted my sense of adventure.  It taught me how to make good choices and to take responsibility for my actions so as to be prepared for my adult life as an independent person.  I believe that when I joined the Xghajra Scouts Group I was given the opportunity to contribute back to scouting by imparting on our members the values which were imparted on me through scouting.

Cub Scout Leader - Janice Preca

"Since I had no scouting background at all, I learnt a lot along the way from all members of the group; young and old."

I first experienced the idea of scouting during the 2017 Summer Camp. On realising what a wonderful family Xghajra Scout Group is, I decided that I should give Leadership a shot.  This has been unarguably one of the best decisions of my life.  Since then, I have realised what a joy and blessing it is to be around children and teens; and it has been a very fruitful learning experience, too.  Since I had no scouting background at all, I learnt a lot along the way from all members of the group; young and old.  I have since

attended a number of training courses and I am on the way of obtaining my Wood Badge in the near future, God willing.

Looking forward to many more scouting adventures with my second family; Xghajra Scout Group.

"I know I wouldnít be the person I am today without scouts, the leaders and the friends I made along the years. I can safely say joining scouts was one of the best decisions I could have made."

I first started scouts because any other extra curricular activity just wasnít for me. I remember the the first time I started I was scared and super shy. Walking through the gates was nerve-wrecking as I didnít know what to expect. From the first meeting I was accepted and welcomed into this group, this family. Through out the years Iíve attended several meetings and several activities, all of these were lessons with an element of fun. I have been to

several camps,  hikes and small activities such as cook-outs, casual meetings were we learn about mapping and what maps include and how to and actually planning an expedition, caving and so much more. One of my favourite activities as a cub scout was the Jamboree. From a cub to a troop to a venture the leaders and my fellow friends have taught me so much, not just about scouting stuff such as knots and first aid but life lessons such as respect and responsibility. Scouts, in particularly the Xghajra Scout Group has been my family for several years, the people in it give it life and meaning. The activities along with the people have helped me grow and bloom from a shy and crazy child to a mature, responsible less-crazy young lady. I know I wouldnít be the person I am today without scouts, the leaders and the friends I made along the years. I can safely say joining scouts was one of the best decisions I could have made.

"However, learning from these experiences also made me realise that we aren't just a group of people but we are also one big family who supports each other."

When I first joined this group, I was a completely different person from who I am now. Since then, I have been a part of this group for years now and I can say that these years were the best memorable years of my life. The first time I attended I felt accepted. Throughout the years, from a cub to troop to a venture, I have attended many activities such as summer and winter camps, group activities, hikes, meetings, expeditions and much more. Each activity from each different section has its own experience from which I have learned

many important values which helped me grow into a better person. However, learning from these experiences also made me realise that we aren't just a group of people but we are also one big family who supports each other. Personally, joining this scout group was one of the best decisions I have ever made because through scouting you learn that it isn't just all about wearing a uniform attending parades and earning badges; but most importantly scouting is a fundamental principle which leads the individual to be more confident, responsible and also help guide the individual as they move towards good citizenship.

"I am grateful for being a part of the Xgħajra Scouts family; one which is tied by the pursuit of doing good and being the best we can be, for ourselves, others, our country and the world."

I take pride in being a scout. It is a unique experience where you get to do unique things. Initially, I joined for the adventure, but I stayed for the friendships and the common goal we share to make the world a better place, whilst having fun doing it. Throughout the years I have learnt so much, both directly from my peers and my leaders, and by observing how they lead in such a successful way. I have acquired so much skills, have been given a

space to hone my talents, and I am looking forward to continue being encouraged to achieve my potential; alongside my fellow scouts.  I am grateful for being a part of the Xgħajra Scouts family; one which is tied by the pursuit of doing good and being the best we can be, for ourselves, others, our country and the world.

"All these new experiences were overwhelming at first but I was always welcomed as a part of the scouts group."

It was 10 years ago, June 2010 when my dad took a wrong turn and ended up in a dead end. There, we discovered what seemed to be a fort whose map was drawn on the front gate. Out of curiosity, my parents looked into it and two weeks later I was attending my first scouts meeting in this same fort. At the age of 6, I didn't know what scouting really was and what to expect from it. It took a while for me to get used to this new place, there were many new faces and new lessons to be learnt. All these new experiences were

overwhelming at first but I was always welcomed as a part of the scouts group.  In November of 2010 I had my first 3-day camp and the rest is history. As a cub, the most important lesson I was taught was to get up right after you fall, and not to cry but to learn from it. When I entered the troop section, I found my second family and supporting, hardworking leaders who helped me mature and taught me the values of friendship and teamwork. It isn't always sunshine and rainbows with my teammates, we do sometimes have disagreements but we always find a way to work together and use our differences as assets. Joining the Xghajra scouts group was probably the best decision my parents made for me and I'm very grateful they did so as it has made me the person I am today. Presently, I am part of the venture unit and a newly recruited troop helping leader. I'm getting a chance to teach what I was taught, and I hope to someday become a supporting and inspiring leader along with my friends.

"I did not only meet new friends but also learned a number of things, such as how important it is to take good care of the environment around us."

I joined Xgħajra scouts group back in 2010 and honestly it was one of the best decisions I've made so far.  I did not only meet new friends but also learned a number of things, such as how important it is to take good care of the environment around us. Thanks to to the group, I became more confident, ready to give a helping hand whenever needed.

I'm currently a junior beaver leader, taking care of our little ones and making sure they have an awesome experience just like mine.

I consider Xgħajra scouts group as my second family, one big loving and caring family.
